A Quarter in Review. Scanned sketchbook pages, and downloaded all my blogposts. I'm working to find a way to organize all the information best to create a document that can be considered its own HPPH edition.

Upstate Jam Cover, Interior Detail

Upstate Jam will be a one sheet book. I designed the layout as if it were a book with pages that could also read as a poster. Unfolded it measures at 19'' x 26''. I'll get them printed at Staples for cheap as so I can make as many as possible. I'm also considering reprinting Avalanche Slides of the Adirondack High Peaks at full scale.

Statement of Work

High Peaks Publishing House produces contemporary artists books that appropriate preexisting media into the context of design as art. Media is collected, edited, and combined to form cultural surveys of Upstate New York.



The book is a powerful and versatile container in which High Peaks Publishing House is immersed. The very nature of a container is to set boundaries. Setting boundaries unfolds opportunity to search inward, to dig infinitely deeper in pursuit of singularity between form and function, craft and design.

Book Covers

Book covers for two books.

Lots of Stuff

Printed, folded, pressed "How to Kill a Bear." Edition of 15. Set type to letterpress print title onto cover (will print Wednesday.) The cover will be a folded sheet of red, handmade paper, pamphlet stitched to the book.  

Upon extensive reading I assembled a medley of Native American literature for my next book. The book will be a portfolio of 2 stories, a medicinal remedy, a lino-cut print, and a brief editors note. I made a mock-up of the cover and set the type for the content.

Lastly, I experimented with printmaking in my living room using my new book-press. After much failure I was able to figure out a recipe to get a near-perfect lino-cut print (to be included in aforementioned book.)

Revised Typography

New Book

I had a lot of free time this weekend with the blizzard and all and I made a new book. It's called "How I Killed a Bear." I rearranged a short story from the late 19th century, recorded my computer reading the story, and set it to bluegrass music. The book is one page with four folds. I will print it digitally and letterpress a title page. Here's the spread:

The cover design will be printed out and attached with photo corner tabs. 

Making books.

I printed spreads and made one book. I'm going to make an edition of ten and will probably do a bigger version sometime down the road.

I'm starting to think about content for my next book. I want to use a manual by the designers collective, N55. I'll juxtapose one of their manuals with an essay or poem in a single book. You can find N55's work at http://www.n55.dk/

Map

In addition to cleaning up the type and aligning numbers I started working on the map. I dont want to add much more information to the map besides marking each mountain featured in the book and incorporating a compass rose design I made. This way readers can see where each mountain/slide is in relationship to the others.

Page Layouts

I first decided what pages from the original book were redundant and deleted them. I brought the remaining 30 pages into photoshop, clone stamped out any pre-existing type, cropped out any instances where the photographer left the airplane in the picture frame, and resized each file to 9'' x 7''. I then brought the files from photoshop to indesign whereupon I added my own type and renumbered the slides.

Book Content

Appropriating scans in photoshop. Cropping, re-numbering information, and applying posterization filter. Next I take the .psd files to inDesign for layout.
